Could your business survive a data loss? How long would it take you to recover?

No business is immune to data loss. The main causes of data loss:

– Human error– Attack– Hardware failure– Logical failure– Corruption

Here are 3 false good ideas about backups you need to know:

F.G.I. #1: A backup solution is too expensive, we'll deal with it when the time comes

  • Data loss can have a snowball effect, meaning the collateral damage can go well beyond finances. In the event of an incident, data loss can cause service interruptions, lost employee productivity, harm and lasting damage to your reputation, and regulatory fines or penalties that lead to medium- to long-term revenue losses.
  • The right approach to backup data depends heavily on your needs. A solution that can withstand 5 minutes of data loss is not in the same league as a daily backup solution.

One thing is certain: data loss generally costs far more than a backup solution.

F.G.I. #2: I don't need a backup, I use Google Drive (or SharePoint)

  • While storing your files online is a good practice, it is not a backup. Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, or SharePoint can save your files continuously (auto-save) and let you access previous versions, but in the case of loss, deletion, or corruption, these features are no longer useful.
  • To ensure you have a 0 risk of data loss, you need at least 3 copies of your data. This is the 3-2-1-0 method: 3 copies > 2 media types > 1 offline copy > 0 errors

F.G.I. #3: I have 3 copies of my data, I'm all set

  • Not so fast — your backup is only as good as your last restore. It's important to verify that restoring your backups actually works; otherwise the backup is useless.
  • To build a solid restore strategy, you need to determine your recovery point objective (RPO) and recovery time objective (RTO).
